One day, I suddenly felt the urge to do it. I wanted to explore the « Gif » format, that of animated images you find on your phones and that you use for birthday wishes. I learnt how to create them for the Rescue Cookbook advertising campaign (the cards sliding out of their box by themselves) as well as for the one for Ma vie cylindrique (my eyes crossing in every directions).

There is a magical side to the creation of Gifs : will the succession of images create a nice effect ? The same way it goes when you create a pattern, when you fill the page with a tiny one that duplicates indefinitely to create a homogeneous weft. Thanks Photoshop.

I don’t know anyone who create phone gifs. It’s quite easy to do. I enjoy imagining my everyday-life, phone messages included.  

I found a new form constraint and I had a lot of content to share. I dived into this new creation for five weeks. It resulted into sixty Gifs.

I sorted them into two categories : the Gifs conveying a message, and those that were creative objects. For the first category, some messages exist in different versions, many are unique.

For the second category, I re-used some pre-exisiting projects that were a good fit for it, and came up with new ones, many of which revolve around my face (I couldn’t have mistreated anyone else’s). I thanks Philippe Lebruman for the portraits he took of me, which weren’t necessarily meant to end up as GIFs.

I fully intend to send them to my friends and family at the appropriate moments.

I’ll add more over time if I find that I’m missing any messages.

I inaugurated them with my Chicken-Eggcup GIF, wishing my contacts a lovely Easter holiday (in April 2025). I signed off as “Cécile who makes GIFs.”

The Qrcode GIF (right at the bottom) links to this page and also prompted a flurry of text messages. I thought you needed another phone to scan it, which amused me. But perhaps I’m mistaken—I’m not very tech-savvy. That said, I’m not completely out of touch either, since I do know how to make GIFs.
